Meeting Will Feature Various Forums, Seminars, Community Activities, Awards and Special Guest Speakers
July 9, 2012 – Washington, D.C./Las Vegas, NV- The National Bar Association (NBA), the largest group of African-American lawyers and judges, will meet for their 87th Annual Convention and Meetings at Caesars Palace, July 14th-19th. The convention will address various issues and legal matters including voter empowerment, gaming and health laws, education and more. The NBA will also recognize several leaders for their outstanding work in the legal field and within their communities. The convention will also host two public events for the Las Vegas community. The event highlights include:
-The Presidential Showcase Forum on voter empowerment and election protection. The panel includes Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. (Rainbow Push Coalition), Barbara Arnwine (Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law), Donna Brazile (Democratic National Committee) and Gary Flowers (Black Leadership Forum). It is open to the public and will offer election protection training immediately following the forum. A press conference will follow forum. Wednesday, July 18th, 1pm-3pm.
-NBA 87th Annual Convention Awards Gala features a live performance from Mint Condition and award presentations to Benjamin Crump, Esq; Linnes Finney, Jr., Esq.; D. Peter Herbert, Esq. (O.B.E.); John W. Boyd, Jr., Esq.; Greg Francis, Esq. and Toyota. Wednesday, July 18th at 7pm.
- The Minority Corporate Counsel Association and VAULT will be recognized, alongside Juliette Pryor, Esq. and Laurie N. Robinson, Esq. with 2012 Pinnacle Awards. Saturday, July 14th at 12pm.
-Young Lawyers Pro-Bono Clinic will offer free legal advice and answer questions for Las Vegas community residents. First A.M.E. Church, 2446 Revere Street in North Las Vegas. This clinic is open to the public. Saturday, July 14th, 10:30am-1:30pm.
-The NBA and Impact will recognize the Nation’s Best Advocates: Top 40 Lawyers Under 40. The recipients of the Nation’s Best Advocate of the Year, Excellence in Leadership, Service, Activism, and Innovation Awards will be announced during the gala, as well. Sunday, July 15th at 7pm.
-High-profile case attorneys Benjamin Crump, Esq. and President Daryl Parks (attorneys for Trayvon Martin’s family) along with Chris Chestnut, Esq. (attorney for Robert Champion’s family in the FAMU hazing case) are featured speakers for the “Update from the Experts” panel. Monday, July 16th, 11:00am – 12:30pm.
-6th Annual Linnes Finney, Jr. NBA Youth Day. The day-long program provides Las Vegas students with a chance to learn about careers in the legal profession. It is open to teens ages 13-18. Youth Day is at the Boyd School of Law-UNLV. Registration is required. Monday, July 16th, 9am – 5pm.
-Shawn Holley, Esq. (attorney for Lindsay Lohan), and Dorothy Clay Sims, Esq. (attorney for Casey Anthony) are featured speakers for “The Imperfect Defense” panel. Tuesday, July 17th, 10:45am – 12:15pm.
-Twelve teens from around the country will compete for national titles and $5,000 in the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition. More than $25,000 will be awarded to students. Tuesday, July 17th at 4pm.
