Stephen Bannon, the controversial figure who helped President Trump win the 2016 election, is leaving his post as the White House chief strategist, ending his career at the center of the Trump administration.

A statement attributed to the White House press secretary was sent to the media on Friday afternoon after many outlets reported Bannon was on his way out. “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day,” the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in a statement. “We are grateful for his service and wish him the best.”

Throughout the week it was being reported that Donald Trump had decided to remove his chief strategist, but that the White House was trying to work out the details. According to New York Times Bannon submitted his resignation on Aug. 7, but the announcement was pushed back because of last weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, Va.
