Nashville, TN (TN TRIBUNE)
YOU HAVE THE POWER (YHTP) held its 9th Annual Powerhouse Awards on Thursday, July 22nd. Unlike past years, the signature event streamed live from The Temple Church on the YOU HAVE THE POWER website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel. To accommodate COVID-19 protocols, a small contingent of guests and honorees gathered at the church.
Sponsors hosted watch parties to view the program online, with boxed suppers provided by The Corner Market Catering Company and wine by West Meade Wine & Liquor Mart.
During this event, eight Gen Z community leaders from across Tennessee were honored for their efforts to create positive outlets for advocacy and support for victims of crime.
“Young leaders made things happen, instinctively recognizing if they wanted to change the world, they had to start where they were. They organized clothing drives, provided food to families, put a spotlight on mental health, supported other students, spoke out about sexual assault and domestic violence, and became political activists,” said Cathy Gurley, CEO of YOU HAVE THE POWER.
Each student was presented with a 1st edition copy of Roots, a novel written by Alex Haley, who lived in Henning, Tennessee. The book was translated into 26 languages, sold more than 8 million copies, and adapted into a TV miniseries.
The awards program is available for viewing on YOU HAVE THE POWER’S YouTube channel.
