The nation’s oldest sorority founded by African American women are making their voices heard in a new way this election season.

As first reported by Salon, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has reportedly filed paperwork withthe Federal Elections Commission on Friday to launch a Political Action Committee (PAC). The sorority, which already has a voter mobilization operation, filed to create the AKA 1908 PAC, connected to the organization’s headquarters in Chicago.

This news comes as one of the sorority’s most notable members, Vice President Kamala Harris, is currently gaining ground in her campaign for the presidency. She spoke at the sorority’s international conference in Dallas last month (prior to President Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race).

In her speech, she championed her sisterhood and the impact it has made in her political career.

The support of AKA (and all of the “Divine Nine” organizations) adds to the growing excitement over Harris’ candidacy. A new NPR/PBS/Marist poll shows that Harris currently has a 51%-48% lead over former President Donald Trump.

At press time, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has no comment.
