Nashville, TN (TN Tribune)–Dr. Jack Macon was an enslaved man who practiced medicine in Maury, Bedford, Giles, Hickman, Williamson and Lincoln counties in the early 1800s. He was considered a “healer of remarkable talents” and eventually opened his own office. Many of his patients were white and petitioned the state legislature to allow him to practice when a law was passed forbidding people of African descent to be doctors.
