Decisions, Decisions, Decisions, which should you use? Ther are pros and cons to both the electric toothbrush and the manual toothbrush. They both are effective with cleaning your teeth if you brush your teeth two times daily. It boils down to a personal preference. Your age and overall general health may play a role in your decision as well.

Manual Toothbrush Pros:

• Portable, easy to travel with, can put in your purse, in your briefcase.

• Available in most stores, including some gas stations.

• Inexpensive, usually cost less than $6.

• Doesn’t require any batteries nor a power supply.

Manual Toothbrush Cons:

• Stats show that its not as effective with removing plaque and preventing gingivitis.

• Bristles may be more abrasive than electric brushes.

• Not able to warn you when you are applying to much pressure to the teeth and gums.

• May not be ideal for people with disability and elderly people due to dexterity issues.

Electric Toothbrush Pros:

• More effective in reducing gingivitis and in removing plaque.

• Easier for young children and older adults to use.

• Some come with timers and sensors.

Electric Toothbrush Cons:

• Can be expensive: generally, costs between $40 and $150.

• Need a power source or a battery to operate it.

• Not as easy to travel with due to their size.

Remember to be thorough regardless of what type of toothbrush you use. Make sure the bristles touch every surface of every tooth and remember to brush two times a day for 2 minutes.
