NASHVILLE, TN — Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s second book This Light We Carry – Overcoming in Uncertain Times is the impetus behind a current Netflix documentary.

The program of the same name is now airing on the streaming service. The 80-minute special,  directed by Linda Mendoza, was filmed late last year in Inglewood, California at the conclusion of the first leg of Michelle Obama’s book tour.

The documentary features an extensive interview between the former First Lady and Oprah Winfrey. The two cover a host of topics, including Obama’s college years, the strain and issues she faced as the nation’s first Black First Lady, her impressions of the media coverage she and President Obama received, the impact of COVID-19 and other subjects.

Besides being her second best seller, The Light We Carry has also not only fueled a book tour that has covered parts of both this and last year, but a podcast hosted by Michelle Obama as well.

The Obamas also run a very successful production company called Higher Ground.

Their latest project “Rustin,” was released earlier this year. It stars Cilman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, a man whose role and importance as a strategist in the civil rights movement, has not received its just exposure or credit.

It is directed by George C. Wolfe and produced in partnership with Netflix.
