NASHVILLE, TN — After winning three awards Sunday at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, the latest version of “The Color Purple” is now available for home viewing.

Such digital platforms as Apple TV and Prime Video made the film available for either rent or purchase on Tuesday.

It will be released to the DVD market on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and conventional DVD March 12.

Those releases will have several bonus features according to Variety. These include three different features with the director Blitz Bazawule, as well as other filmmakers and cast members. There will also be behind the scenes footage documenting the changes done in transforming Alice Walker’s acclaimed novel into a musical.

The latest adaptation is co-produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg. There was previously a 1985 film version starring Whoopi Goldberg as Celie. It was directed by Spielberg and Winfrey received an Oscar nomination for her role as Sofia.

Fantasia Barrino took the role of Celie in the 2007 Broadway revival and reprises it in the latest version. Danielle Brooks, who portrayed Sofia in a 2015 stage revival, also plays that character in the 2023 production. 

Others in the current cast include Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, H. E. R., Halle Berry, Corey Hawkins and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

“The Color Purple” won Critics Choice Awards Sunday for Best Musical, Best Ensemble and Best Music. It is expected to contend for Oscar Awards in both the acting and crafts categories when the nominations are announced next Tuesday.
