On this Labor Day – let’s share with others the unsung story of Black Labor. That helped build the largest economy in the world and its democracy. Organized Black workers, like those that unionized Amsterdam News in 1935 (and yes! we are still proudly unionized!) – the first time Black workers successfully organized against Black management – fueled the beginnings of the U.S. Civil Rights movement and the power of the Black vote – now in full flower with the historic candidacy of Kamala Harris for U.S. President.

My dad, NYC powerhouse Wilbert “Bill” Tatum, created our foundation in 1991, so that stories like this can be preserved and told by the Black and brown journalists of tomorrow. Invest today to help ensure the future of Black journalism.

Mainstream media more often than not poorly covers issues of importance to our Black and brown readership.  That’s why Amsterdam News and other Black newspapers nationwide – are so important.  This internship program grows future Black journalists to help keep Black newspapers alive!

Because mainstream media is white owned – and its newsrooms extremely white – reporting about our community’s issues is often just plain wrong. Our foundation’s internship program helps ensure mainstream media has a better chance of “getting it right” with more Black and brown editors and reporters in their newsrooms.

Please give today.  And to you who have already given – deepest deepest thanks.  Please consider giving again!

Together – we’ll ensure the stories of our community are not lost,

“Ely”
