Tennessee is set to bolster its efforts against housing discrimination with a substantial injection of funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The grants, totaling $550,000, are part of HUD’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) and aim to bolster endeavors to address violations of the Fair Housing Act and eradicate discriminatory practices in housing across the state.

The announcement arrives as HUD maintains its commitment to eradicating housing discrimination and promoting equitable housing practices nationwide. Acting HUD Secretary Adrianne Todman highlighted the significance of these grants, stating, “Today, we’re awarding more than $30 million to help our partners on the ground educate the public, eliminate discriminatory housing practices, and fully enforce the Fair Housing Act.”

With $425,000 designated under the Private Enforcement Initiative (PEI) and an additional $125,000 under the Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI), Tennessee is poised to strengthen its enforcement of fair housing laws and raise public awareness about housing rights and responsibilities.

These grants will empower fair housing organizations across Tennessee to conduct investigations, testing, and enforcement activities aimed at preventing or eliminating discriminatory housing practices, Moreover, educational outreach efforts will inform the public, housing providers, and local governments about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act.

The grants will enable Tennessee-based organizations to conduct fair housing testing, engage in educational campaigns, and enhance enforcement-related initiatives. They will play a pivotal role in addressing discrimination based on various protected classes, including religion, sex, race, and others outlined in the Fair Housing Act.

HUD encourages individuals who believe they have experienced housing discrimination to reach out for assistance. Further information is available at www.hud.gov/fairhousing and www.justice.gov.

Through initiatives like FHIP, HUD remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing fair housing practices and ensuring equal access to housing opportunities for all Tennesseans.
