MEMPHIS, TN — Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins marked her 100-day milestone in office with a comprehensive review of transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing educational outcomes across Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS). In a special address – with nearly 700 in attendance and 9,000 watching online, “Building a Legacy: The First 100 Days with Superintendent Feagins,” drew enthusiastic support from the community and highlighted the district’s progress under her leadership.
“Bringing the community along the journey has remained a priority for me since taking the helm on April 1,” said Superintendent Feagins. “Seeing a packed room filled with excitement on a Wednesday night was incredibly encouraging, as we reflected on the first 100 days and shared a bold vision for elevating the excellence of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.”
Dr. Feagins outlined several key initiatives, highlighting her commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community engagement. Under the banners of SUPE, SOAR, and IGNITE Schools, she introduced a strategic framework to provide focused support from Central Office departments for each cluster of schools.
Student Achievement
• C.O.M.E (Count On Me Every Day) to Win will serve as a call to action for students and families to be present on day one and every day, as the District prioritizes student attendance.
• Through the new Central Office CHAMPS program, Central Office staff will mentor 15,000 middle school students.
Business Operations
• Highlighting professional growth, the MSCS L.E.A.D. Academy will empower employees through career advancement and leadership development.
• Addressing infrastructure needs, Project BUILD is an ambitious plan to enhance school facilities and create optimal learning environments.
• For better communication, the new “WheresTheBus?” app will provide families with real-time student transportation updates.
• Upcoming Next Up Hiring Blitzes will ensure the right people are in the right place to serve students, staff, and families.
• Starting July 12 in Birmingham, Ala., the district will host a recruitment event for certified PK-12 teachers.
• On July 16 and July 18, the Next Up Hiring Blitz will go nationwide with a virtual recruitment effort.
• On July 20, the district will hold a hiring event at the Teaching & Learning Academy for nutrition services and facilities positions, along with a recruitment event in Jackson, Miss., for certified PK-12 teachers.
Inclusive Excellence
• MSCS Matters will strategically extend welcome center hours to accommodate families with non-traditional work schedules.
• Legacy University will serve as a comprehensive resource hub, designed to empower parents with the necessary tools for effectively supporting their children’s educational journey.
Strategic Communication and Partnerships
• To strengthen community ties, Dr. Feagins has established the Office of Partnerships and Development, ensuring every school is paired with a dedicated community or business partner.
• The Next Up National initiative, starting July 12, in Birmingham, Ala., will aim to attract more top-tier educators to MSCS.
Next-Level Readiness
• By prioritizing key partnerships, MSCS will establish apprenticeship and externship opportunities for students, integrating practical experiences into their curriculum to better prepare them for their future.
