NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Today, Metro Water Services mailed annual flood risk information to 18,000 properties located in a designated flood risk area such as a floodplain or floodway within Davidson County. This notification is intended to advise the residents of their flood risk and provides guidance on managing those risks.
All Davidson County residents are encouraged to understand their individual vulnerability, even if not in a designated floodplain or floodway, and proactively manage their flood risks. Mapped Davidson County floodplains and floodways can be viewed on interactive maps at Parcel Viewer (nashville.gov). The information mailed to the properties mentioned above is available on our website in both English and Spanish at Flood Risk Information | Nashville.gov
While mapped floodplains offer valuable insights, all streams within Metro Nashville are subject to flooding and backwater flooding can be significant. If a property is particularly near streams, it could be at risk to overflow and backwater events. For that reason, Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County has long recognized the importance of property protection from floods and has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) since 1982, making residents and businesses within Davidson County eligible for flood insurance through FEMA.
As a participant in the NFIP Community Rating System (CRS), eligible Davidson County property owners are provided with a 10% discount on their flood insurance. The voluntary participation in the CRS encourages community floodplain management activities that are managed by MWS Stormwater.
A flood insurance policy offers critical financial protection against potential flood damage, a cost not covered by standard homeowner’s insurance. This coverage is readily available for homeowners, renters, condominium owners, and commercial property owners alike. FEMA provides comprehensive information and resources regarding the NFIP on their website: https://www.floodsmart.gov/.
