Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Department of Physics and Astronomy and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences hosted a special viewing event Aug. 21, 2017, on campus for a total solar eclipse, visible along a narrow path in the continental United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, and right through the heart of Tennessee.
This total solar eclipse was visible from middle Tennessee — and the campus of MTSU — for the first time in over 500 years. The NASA-sanctioned event, held in the yard in front of the new Science Building, included a music stage featuring student bands from Match Records, the student label in the College of Media and Entertainment; self-guided tours of the three-building Science Corridor of Innovation; and various tents on the grounds with activities run by university faculty. The stage also featured a science show with professors prepping the crowd for the solar phenomenon.
