    Historical Marker Unveiled in Centennial Park

    NASHVILLE, TN — The unveiling of a historical marker in Centennial Park in Nashville took place on March 23, 2022 The historical marker names the history of the former swimming pool facility that was closed during the civil rights movement and desegregation efforts of the 1960s. The marker honors the work of the late Kwame Leo Lillard and Matthew Walker Jr. 

    A ceremony took place on the grounds of Centennial Art Center. Speakers included Evelyn Lillard, Kwame’s wife, Dr. Phyllis Hildreth, Dr. Learotha Williams, and Candace Koney (niece of Matthew Walker Jr. reading a statement from M. Nicole Walker, Matthew’s daughter), Parks Director Monique Odom, and Mayor John Cooper.
