NASHVILLE, TN — Recently the Mississippi Community College Foundation hosted the eleventh annual Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  This event was conceived in the interest of recognizing coaches and athletes for their successes both on and off the field and has inducted 210 individuals since its inception.

One of this year’s honorees is Dr. Joseph Webb, CEO of Nashville General Hospital at Meharry. Dr. Webb played basketball at Coahoma Community College from 1971-73. He was the recipient of the Tigers’ Most Improved Player Award during his freshman campaign. During his sophomore year, he had one of the most legendary seasons in Coahoma history, averaging a triple-double of 22 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots per game and received the team MVP. He participated in the regional playoffs and was also selected as MVP of the regional tournament.

“We commend Dr. Webb as one of this year’s inductees for the 2017 class, for not only being an outstanding athlete at Coahoma Community College, but also for continuing his education and preparing for a career in the field of health science and hospital administration,” said Dr. Howell C. Garner, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Foundation. “Dr. Webb is certainly a shining example of someone who began his career preparation as an athlete in the Mississippi Community College System and went on to become a tremendous success in his profession.  His success in health services is indicative of his natural ability as a student-athlete, as well, it reflects his personal drive, and determination, both on and off the athletic field.”

Webb’s triple double average per game made him a highly recruited prospect for major universities. After playing two years for Tennessee State University, he earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Health and Physical Education. He then obtained his Master of Science in Hospital and Health Services Administration and a Doctorate of Science in Health Services Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Today, Dr. Webb has more than 25+ years of proven expertise in managing for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare organizations.

When asked how he feels about receiving this honor, Dr. Webb shared, “Community colleges are a true treasure across the country. Coahoma Community College was the college in my neighborhood, in the town where I grew up. Without the opportunity to go to a community college and play basketball, I would not be where I am today.
