The AFL-CIO, America’s largest federation of labor unions, has voiced its support for the reintroduction of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the Senate. Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond emphasized the significance of this legislation, especially as the nation commemorates the anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” and the historic Selma to Montgomery marches.

Redmond underscored the Act’s homage to the late Rep. John Lewis, a stalwart champion of civil rights, and its pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive democracy. He highlighted the labor movement’s enduring commitment to social and economic justice, recognizing the inseparable link between voting rights and these foundational principles.

“The labor movement has a long history of advocating for social and economic justice, and the right to vote is inseparable from these principles,” Redmond remarked.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act seeks to fortify democratic processes and counteract any efforts aimed at stifling the voices of marginalized communities. By reinstating and bolstering key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the legislation aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral system and ensure equal access to the ballot box for all citizens.

As the AFL-CIO mobilizes in support of this critical piece of legislation, it urges the Senate to prioritize its passage. Redmond affirmed the federation’s unwavering commitment to advancing justice and equality, emphasizing the importance of protecting the fundamental right to vote.

“The AFL-CIO stands united in urging the Senate to prioritize and pass this critical piece of legislation, sending a clear message that democracy should be accessible to all,” Redmond stated.

In the face of ongoing challenges to voting rights across the country, the AFL-CIO remains steadfast in its advocacy for an inclusive democracy and the preservation of the sacred right to vote. As the nation confronts the legacies of inequality and discrimination, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act represents a significant step toward realizing the vision of a more just and equitable society.
