NASHVILLE, TN — Tuesday, July 5, is the last day to register to vote in the Aug. 4 special metro council election, the Davidson County school board election and legislative primaries.

Early voting is July 15 to July 30 for Metro Council’s District 1 race between Rueben Dockery, Nick Leonardo and William D. Mason Jr. to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Lionel Greene Jr.

The candidate with more than half the votes cast in that race would be eligible to take the oath of office as soon as the election commission certifies the results. If none of the three wins on Aug. 4, a run-off election would be held, probably in early September.

A dozen candidates are running in the Aug. 4 election for odd-numbered district seats on the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Board. To vote in that election, residents must be registered on or before July 5.

The two-week early voting period for the school board election also starts July 15.

The candidates for the school board races are as follows.

    • In District 1, Jeanette Carter is challenging incumbent Sharon Dixon Gentry.
    • Jane Grimes Meneely and Jill Speering face off for the District 3 seat.
    • District 5 also has no incumbent. The candidates are Christiane Buggs. Miranda Christy, Corey Gathings and Erica Lanier.
    • In District 7, Jackson Miller is challenging incumbent Will Pinkston.
    • Thom Drussel is challenging District 9 incumbent Amy M. Frogge.

Voter registration forms post marked on July 5 will be accepted at the election office and processed as if they were filed in-person.

Among the various legislative primaries on the Aug. 4 ballot is the Democratic and Republican primaries for Congress. U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper is unopposed in the 5th Congressional District Democratic Party Primary, and Jody Ball is the only candidate running for the Republican nomination to be the GOP congressional candidate in November.

The deadline to register to vote in the presidential and state general election is Oct. 11. Early voting in those races is Oct. 19-Nov. 3. Nov. 8 is the election day when, presumably, Hillary Clinton will face Donald Trump for the office of president.
