NASHVILLE, TN — Tennessee State University graduate, Judge Sam Coleman was appointed to General Session Court, Division 10 on May 16, 2017. He is currently running to assume the seat in the upcoming August 2, 2018 election.
Before becoming a judge, Coleman practiced law in several areas including criminal, civil, probate, landlord and tenant law. He served as Metro Council Member for the citizens of Nashville, Davidson County District 32 from 2003 to 2011 and District 33 from 2015 until becoming Judge in 2017. Judge Coleman retired from State Government with 32 years of service, and has been cited as one of Nashville’s strong community leaders. He worked as an Administrator for the Department of Children’s Services.
Judge Coleman attended the Nashville School of Law receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1989. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Nashville Bar Association, Napier Looby Bar Association, and National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
The Metropolitan General Sessions Court of Nashville-Davidson County is a high volume limited jurisdiction Court that hears civil, misdemeanor, felony, traffic, environmental, and metropolitan ordinance violations. This Court is served by 11 judges that are elected to an eight year term.
Coleman pledged to bring fairness and integrity to the bench, “I make one pledge to you and one promise,” Coleman said. “One thing you can be sure of, I will work hard to be a good teammate. … I will work hard making sure the integrity of the bench is held high.”
