NASHVILLE, TN — No fan base was less pleased by the results of last week’s SEC Tournament held in Nashville than Tennessee supporters.
Coming off having won the regular season SEC title for the first time since 2008, they looked lifeless in losing the home and regular season finale to Kentucky. But that was shrugged off as a game with nothing to play for.
Then came the SEC Tournament opener and they looked even worse against Mississippi State. They scored a season low 16 first half points on the way to another blowout loss.
That defeat cost Tennessee a number one seed. But they did land a number two, and Thursday open against 15th seed St. Peter’s in Charlotte. It’s the fourth time they’ve been a number two NCAA seed. The last time they were was in 2019 and things didn’t work out so well. They were upset by Purdue 99-94. Tennessee will be an overwhelming favorite Thursday. Last year they reached the Sweet 16 before losing 62-55 to Florida Atlantic.
The Lady Vols got a sixth seed in the women’s tournament, despite coming within a second from beating top ranked South Carolina in the SEC Tournament.
It’s their lowest seed since 2018. They will face Green Bay in Raleigh, NC. The first round women’s games are on Friday and Saturday.
