The GLAAD Awards, formed to celebrate the diversity of LGBTQ art, announced their nominees for the 2024 season with the ceremony to be held March 14th at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and May 11th at the Hilton Midtow in New York City.  The awards were established in 1990 bythe Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community. The awards specifically target and promote positive portrayals of LGBTQ+ issues.

Outstanding Music Artist nominees include significant Black talent including Billy Porter for “Black Mona Lisa”, Janelle Monae for “The Age of Pleasure”, and Victoria Money for “JAGUAR II”. Other nominees include boygenius, Brandy Clark, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Renee Rapp, Sam Smith and Troye Sivan.

In the Outstanding Film category, “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple” are both nominated. Both films feature large ensemble casts with “American Fiction” satirizing the struggle of Black writers to sell their novels without leaning into stereotypes, with the main character’s most recent novel being rejected for not being “Black enough.”

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is nominated in Outstanding Film-Limited Theatrical Release and is a coming-of-age story of two first-generation Mexican immigrants living in Texas during the 1980s and their exploration of their identity juxtaposed against the American South.

The GLAAD awards will also recognize excellence in documentary filmmaking including nominee Magnola Pictures “Little Richard: I Am Everything and outstanding tv series that includes Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl.” The award show also features Spanish language awards including Outstanding Scripted Television Series, Outstanding TV Journalism, Outstanding Online Journalism Article, and Outstanding Online Journalism-Video or Multimedia.

GLAAD will also award a Special Recognition honor to “Renaissance: a Film by Beyonce”. If you are interesting in viewing the GLAAD Awards, they will be streaming on Hulu.
