The Outlander PHEV uses series parallel hybrid technology. Unlike other hybrids, most of the time motion comes from its twin electric motors, and it is this bias which makes the vehicle so unique in the hybrid world. In EV mode the PHEV can travel up to 33 miles (WLTP 28 miles): ample distance for the average daily commute. EV mode means no petrol, no emissions, and no trade off in terms of power – torque is instant and the top speed 83mph.
When more power is needed, or when the battery’s charge falls, the Series Hybrid mode kicks in, with the petrol engine acting as a generator. For longer periods of high speed motoring the Parallel Hybrid mode takes over. You won’t know when any of this happens – the transition is seamless. if you wish, the PHEV will automatically select the optimum mode.
