Out of 175 nominations from HBCUs across the country, Tennessee State University is a finalist in 10 out of 28 categories according to the most recent issue of HBCU Digest. The magazine published the 2017 Historically Black College and University award nominations ranging from best marching band to best nursing program for the 2016-2017 academic school year.

Aarian Foreman, president of TSU’s 76thStudent Government Association, was ecstatic to see his administration get nominated and named a finalist.

“We were honored to be recognized over 100 other student government administrations, honored to be one recognized for serving the students while we stayed dedicated and continued to push the idea of policy and pushing forward the students agenda getting things they wanted to see done get done. It’s always a blessing to see that others acknowledge the work they see being put in at our university,” Foreman said.

Amber Hughes, a TSU track star who has already brought home the OVC Champion Student of the year award, has also been nominated in the category for athletic excellence. Dr. Glenda Glover, the first female president of TSU and its eighth president, is also a finalist for an award. HBCU Digest has been hosting these awards for several years and TSU is proud to be a part of the annual engagement.

“This is the their 7th annual award ceremony, and they usually open up for nominations earlier in the spring semester and have a panel of judges that narrow it down to five to six finalist in each category,” K. Dawn Rutledge, Director of Office of University Publications said. “The award is really just the distinguished honor from what I know; they have published the nominees and will publish the winners in each category in July.”

Winners will be announced on July 14 during the annual program at the Gallup Building in Washington, D.C. Tickets are available online.
