By Peter White NASHVILLE, TN– The number of homeless in Nashville doesn’t seem to change even though since 2013 about four thousand people have found permanent housing thanks to Metro’s Homeless Commission and several nonprofits like Open Table that work to get people a roof over their heads. The official number of Metro’s homeless is around 2100 but the actual number is much higher, perhaps 21,000, according to Samuel Lester, a homeless outreach worker. “If 2100 was the real number we would have solved homelessness in Nashville already. More than done it,” he told the Tribune. (See Tribune Jan 11-17,…

When should you throw away your mascara? Your pillowcase? Did you know that smoke alarms should be replaced after a certain amount of time? If not, you’re not alone. Many household items don’t have expiration dates, making it difficult for most of us to know when it’s time to toss them. Fret not! Here are nine items sitting around your house that you should probably get rid of right this minute. 1. Pillow case. Replace your pillow case every year. Otherwise, your face is coming into contact with all your hair and body oils, which causes bacteria. Even worse? Bacteria…
Greetings District 1: Its with a heavy heart that I am sending this my final email as your councilman. If you have not already heard, I received the appointment from the Metro Council last Tuesday evening to be the next Division III General Sessions Judge here in Nashville. Judicial ethics prevent me from being both a judge and your councilman. As of 2:00 pm Sunday, January 7, 2018, I will be submitting my resignation to Vice Mayor Briley resigning from my role as the District 1 Councilman so that I may begin my new full-time position as a judge. PLEASANTON, CA — Edwin Hawkins, the four-time Grammy® Award-winning leader of The Edwin Hawkins Singers’ 1969 million-seller, “Oh Happy Day,” died January 15th at his home in the Bay area, after a bout with pancreatic cancer. He was 74 years old. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Edwin Hawkins –– a celebrated artist, innovator, and music icon. Though he will be greatly missed the world over, the message of love, life, and encouragement that he incorporated into his music gives us all the same hope that we’ll join him in heaven and sing `Oh Happy…
Fox News marked the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by publishing a ridiculous article with the headline “Please stop politicizing Martin Luther King Day. It’s a day for national unity, not political division.” They are deliberately lying to Americans about what this day means — and what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for and actually believed. He knew that his life and the work of racial and economic justice were inherently political. With Donald Trump in the White House, working with Fox News to reinforce white supremacy and attack Black protest, it’s worth remembering exactly what Dr. King…

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI) a faith-based coalition of 34,000 churches comprised of 15 denominations and 15.7 million African Americans, has sent letters to all the major Black, White and Latino denominations to ask them to prepare Church edicts and resolutions to denounce the President’s repeated racist statements since the election. Rev. Evans is encouraging every single major denomination to do so regardless of race or theology because it undermines the principal of our democracy and our Church principles. God loves everyone equally, he does not have any respective person. Rev. Anthony Evans, President of the…
MURFREESBORO, TN — The way MTSU student Damarcus Seaberry sees it, part of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy is embodied in Seaberry’s very presence on the Blue Raider campus — a young African-American male pursuing his dream of one day becoming an athletic director. “Martin Luther King spoke perseverance,” said Seaberry, a 22-year-old senior leisure, sports and tourism studies major. “That no matter what we go through in life … no matter what obstacles come our way, we always have to keep pushing forward.” The Covington, Tennessee, resident also recalled the lessons his grandmother taught him to show “genuine” love…
By Peter White NASHVILLE, TN — There is plenty of blame to go around. Mayor Megan Barry’s budget and the city council that approved it, only gave General Hospital $35 million of the $55 million it needed. That was last May. Since then, the marriage between Meharry and Nashville General Hospital went South. The medical school’s residents have trained at General for twenty-three years and the hospital has provided the patients to treat them. Shortly after attempts to increase General’s subsidy failed, Dr. Jan Brandes, Hospital Authority chair, met with Meharry’s CEO, James E.K. Hildreth, to discuss the imminent cutbacks…
