HOUSTON, Texas – Kamala Harris received support from one of music’s biggest stars. Beyoncé officially endorsed Kamala Harris for president at a Houston rally last Friday in her hometown of Houston. Beyoncé rarely speaks on politics, but took a firm position that women’s reproductive rights and health care were critical issues this election.

“I’m not here as a celebrity; I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother,” she said to the energized crowd. “A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided.”

She continued, “Imagine our daughters growing up seeing what’s possible with no ceilings, no limitations. We must vote, and we need you.”

In addition to Beyoncé’s appearance, her Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also joined her on stage. Beyoncé introduced Harris to the 22,000-plus capacity crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, please give a big, loud, Texas welcome to the next president of the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris.”

Unlike 2016 when she performed during a rally for Hillary Clinton, there was no performance at the Harris rally. However, early on in Harris’s presidential bid, Beyoncé gave the campaign permission to use her song, “Freedom,” which has become the cornerstone of the Harris campaign representing resilience and liberty.

Harris addressed the crowd, underscoring the urgency of defending freedoms under threat. “We know freedom is not to be given. It is not to be bestowed. It is ours by right, and we are prepared to fight for it,” Harris said. “We must be loud. We must organize. We must mobilize. We must energize.”
