NASHVILLE, TN — Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) will celebrate its 160th anniversary, Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11.
Events will include an overarching Community Day on Saturday and Worship Service on Sunday. The church is located in South Nashville at 1300 King Hollands Ave., formerly South Street.
“We are delighted to celebrate this special milestone anniversary with our congregants, friends, supporters and community leaders,” said the Reverend Darrell K. Scott, pastor of the church.
The Community Day, scheduled from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. will feature many fun activities on the front parking lot of the church. There will be food trucks, water dunking, games, and great food, all with a focus on community engagement. Information about various health issues will be available and most significantly, voter information will be accessible. “Our goal is to make it possible that every citizen is prepared for the November election and vote,” said Pastor Scott.
The Sunday service will begin at 10 a.m. and the preacher delivering the message is the dynamic Rev. Dr. Roderick Belin. This energetic and vibrant preacher serves as the president and publisher of the AMEC Publishing House.
“Our hope is that everyone will join us for this glorious occasion when we honor God for his grace and mercy and celebrate the longevity of this outstanding church,” said Dr. Roy Johnson, Chair of the Anniversary Program.
Various congregations in the area and beyond, dignitaries, elected officials, educators, community activists, non-profit organizations, among others are expected to join the congregants at this special time in the life of the church.
Greater Bethel’s roots were planted in 1866, when a group of 30 met at the home of Sister Ellen Calhoun to organize the church. And, in 1868 Rev. Henry Glasco became the first official pastor with the name, Bethel. From its humble beginnings, the church has had nearly 20 pastors with Rev. Darrell K. Scott serving as the current pastor.
“We are excited about this special time as we Grow with God and Bloom at Bethel,” added Pastor Scott.
