Washington, D.C.–Democrats are projected to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives following Tuesday’s midterm elections, potentially paving the way for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York to become the first Black speaker of the House, according to theGrio.

TheGrio reports that Democrats are expected to secure at least 218 seats, the number required for a House majority. NBC News projections cited by theGrio indicate the party could win as many as 244 seats.

Jeffries, 56, currently serves as House Democratic leader and represents a Brooklyn congressional district. If elected speaker by the incoming House, he would make history as the first African American to lead the chamber since its establishment in 1789.

Democratic control of the House would also provide the party with greater authority to oversee President Donald Trump’s administration. According to theGrio, congressional Democrats are expected to pursue investigations involving the president’s financial interests, documents related to Jeffrey Epstein and federal spending reductions.

TheGrio also reports that Democrats intend to challenge the administration’s policies concerning the conflict in Iran and funding reductions affecting Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright, an adviser to Jeffries, expressed confidence in the congressman’s ability to lead. Speaking with theGrio, Seawright described Jeffries as prepared for the responsibilities ahead and said he believes the Democratic leader will exceed expectations while honoring the confidence placed in him by his colleagues and voters.

The new Congress is scheduled to convene Jan. 3, 2027, when lawmakers will select the next House speaker.
