Letter to the Editor: Women’s Leadership Continues Despite Setbacks

As we reflect on this election and its outcomes, we recognize that for many, there is a sense of disappointment in seeing another opportunity for a woman to lead our nation deferred. Yet, the story of women in America has always been one of resilience, courage, and determination. While history is made at every election, significant change often requires perseverance and sustained effort.

Women have faced setbacks before, yet each time, they have rallied together, breaking new ground and driving change. After every challenge, we’ve seen women step forward and lead—from the historic ‘Year of the Woman’ in 1992 to the record number of women in Congress today. Just four years ago, six remarkable women vied for the Democratic presidential nomination, showcasing the breadth of talent, vision, and leadership women bring to our national landscape.

As Vice President Kamala Harris said in her concession speech, being intentional about building community and building coalitions matters. Now more than ever, we must be deliberate in our efforts to support one another and foster a sense of unity that drives progress.

At the National Women’s History Museum, we are relentless in our pursuit of representation and equality. By sharing the stories of the courageous women who fought for our right to vote, as well as the stories of those who run for and serve in public office, we can inspire all women to believe in the transformative power of their voices.

We will continue championing initiatives that dismantle barriers and create opportunities for future generations. By learning from women’s triumphs and challenges, we can empower the next generation to lead, innovate, and make extraordinary contributions to the world.

    With gratitude,
