Mayor Launches Effort to Plan Nashville General Hospital’s Future

NASHVILLE, TN — Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell has established a committee to examine the future of Nashville General Hospital, renewing efforts to determine whether the city’s public safety-net hospital needs a new facility, where it should be located and how the project could be financed.

O’Connell announced the Vision Committee on Oct. 30, asking members to develop recommendations before the end of his term. The review will consider the hospital’s long-term facility needs, its relationship with Meharry Medical College and how Nashville can maintain access to care without placing an unreasonable financial burden on taxpayers.

Nashville General has operated from a facility on Meharry’s campus since 1998. Founded in 1890, the hospital serves patients regardless of their ability to pay and provides approximately $60 million in uncompensated care annually.

The hospital also serves as a teaching facility for Meharry, a historically Black medical college. The partnership between the two institutions has been central to discussions about the hospital’s future and the possibility of developing a new facility.

Hospital leadership has emphasized the need to plan for changing health care demands, population growth and limited access to medical services in parts of Nashville. A new facility could give the hospital an opportunity to update its infrastructure and better serve patients, but questions about location, financing and long-term operating costs remain.

The idea of replacing the current hospital has been discussed for years. Earlier proposals included building on city-owned property in MetroCenter, but that effort faced objections over the proposed location. The mayor’s new committee is expected to revisit the broader question of where a future hospital should be situated and what services it should provide.

The review also follows changes in hospital leadership and renewed efforts to strengthen the relationship between Nashville General and Meharry. Dr. Veronica Elders was named the hospital’s permanent chief executive officer after serving as interim leader following the departure of longtime CEO Joseph Webb. The institutions also reached a new professional services agreement, addressing a relationship that had been a source of tension.

Meharry President Dr. James E.K. Hildreth and Elders have welcomed the formation of the committee, reflecting support for continued planning around the hospital’s role in Nashville’s health care system.

The hospital is a critical provider for residents who are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise face barriers to medical care. Any decision about a new facility will involve balancing those needs with the financial realities of operating a public hospital.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to help guide the next steps, including whether Nashville should pursue a new building, where it could be located and how the city would pay for it.
