There’s been plenty of anticipation regarding Morris Chestnut’s new CBS series “Watson,” a show he is also executive producing. The network late last week finally released publicity photos of Chestnut as the title character, while also announcing a premiere date. The show will make its debut Jan. 26, 2025, airing directly after the AFC Championship game, a prime spot often used to launch promising new series. It will then shift to its regular time slot of 9 p.m. CT Feb. 16, while also streaming on Paramount +. The premise combines elements of mystery and medical shows, starring Chestnut as the longtime friend and colleague of Sherlock Holmes.

The series begins six months after Holmes has been killed by his arch-enemy Moriarty. Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. However, the twist comes in that Watson hasn’t completely abandoned his old life. Both Watson and Moriarty will eventually write their own chapters of a story that has fascinated readers and audiences for more than a century. The show  marks the return of Chestnut to the role of a doctor. He portrayed Dr. Ike Prentiss in the HBO series “Nurse Jackie” from 2013-2014, and played Dr. Barrett Cain on the Fox show “The Resident” from 2019-2021.

Chestnut has a lengthy and substantial acting history. He made his initial impact in John Singleton’s 1991 epic “Boyz In The Hood,” portraying a character named Ricky. Chestnut subsequently appeared in such films as

“G.I. Jane,” “The Brothers,” “Like Mike,” “Ladder 49,” “The Game Plan,” and “The Call” among others.. He also played Lance Sullivan in “The Best Man,” reprising the role in sequel film “The Best Man Holiday,” and follow-up series “The Best Man: The Final Chapters.”

Other television roles have included playing Ryan Nichols in ABC’s “V,” the lead role of Beaumont Darius Rosewood, Jr. in Fox’s “Rosewood,” and Hakeem Rashad in Prime Video’s “Goliath.”  He has been nominated for four NAACP Image Awards, winning once for “Nurse Jackie.” Chestnut has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“Watson” will also star Rochelle Aytes as Mary Morstan, Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian, Peter Mark Kendal as Stephens Croft and Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson. It will air locally on WTVF-5.
