October 7, 2024 is National Child Health Day. This day was initially recognized in 1928 by President Calvin Coolidge to raise awareness of children’s health and wellbeing in our country. The 1939 Child Health Day slogan, “The health of the child is the power of the nation,” still remains significant and vital to our nation’s survival. Children are some of the most vulnerable in our community. As such, total health of our children is a day-to-day focus for parents, educators, medical personnel, mental health professionals — and The Links, Incorporated. National Child Health Day is intended to bring focus and awareness to children’s physical and emotional health. The 2024 theme, “Foundation for the Future”, amplifies the importance of a healthy future by prioritizing children’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

On this National Child Health Day, please take a moment to focus on the children in our communities. Consider how your Links Chapter can incorporate additional ways of supporting Black children and other children of African descent in your current programs and activities, such as: Encouraging daily walks and other forms of exercise
Teaching children about making healthy food choices and the impact of those choices on their lives
Incorporating into a chapter’s programming age-appropriate sessions on mental health, such as anti-bullying segments for elementary and middle school students, or suicide prevention for high school and college students
As plans are being made for the 2025 Black Family Wellness Expos, consider adding specific sessions for children, youth and teens.
