NASHVILLE — Today, Memphis City Council is considering a one-year pause on new data center projects. Echoing calls from communities across Tennessee, the Tennessee Democratic Party is calling for a pause on hyperscale data center construction until comprehensive protections are in place to safeguard Tennesseans’ health, natural resources, environment, and household utility bills.
Statement from Rachel Campbell, Chairwoman of the Tennessee Democratic Party:
“Most Tennesseans from every corner of this state, from every background and every zip code, want the same thing: to be able to build a good life and afford to live here. Technological innovation cannot come at the expense of human life, our natural resources, or working families’ ability to pay their bills. With families already struggling with record-high costs for groceries, housing, healthcare, electricity and other basic necessities, Tennesseans cannot afford policies that put corporate profits ahead of the people who call this state home. We stand with Memphians and Tennesseans across our state who are demanding data center moratoriums now. Tennessee Democrats will continue fighting to protect the lives, livelihoods, and quality of life of every Tennessee family.”
