TikTok to close Nashville office, cutting 250 jobs

NASHVILLE, TN — TikTok is shutting down its Nashville office and eliminating 250 jobs, a move that represents one of the largest recent corporate layoffs in Middle Tennessee and marks a significant change for a company that only recently expanded its presence in the city.

According to filings with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, TikTok’s U.S. Data Security division will permanently close its Nashville operation, with layoffs expected to take effect in October.

The company said the decision is part of an effort to streamline operations and better position itself for long-term growth. TikTok has not publicly announced whether affected employees will be offered opportunities to relocate or transfer to other company locations.

The closure comes just two years after TikTok established a major Nashville footprint. The company leased more than 143,000 square feet in the Moore Building on Music Row, one of the largest office leases completed in Nashville at the time. The move was widely viewed as another sign of the city’s emergence as a growing technology and business center.

The Nashville office served as part of TikTok’s U.S. Data Security operation, a division created to address concerns about data privacy and security in the United States. The office quickly became one of the most prominent technology-related employers in the city’s urban core.

The layoffs are part of a broader trend affecting technology and media companies nationwide. Businesses across the sector have reduced staff, consolidated offices and reorganized operations as they adapt to changing economic conditions, new technologies and evolving business priorities.

For Nashville, the announcement is a reminder that even high-profile corporate expansions can be subject to changing market conditions. While the city continues to attract major employers in finance, health care and technology, the loss of 250 jobs is a notable setback for local economic development efforts.

Economic leaders have emphasized that Nashville remains one of the fastest-growing business markets in the South, supported by continued investment from companies across multiple industries. Even so, TikTok’s departure highlights the challenges cities face in retaining large corporate operations in a rapidly changing economy.

State workforce agencies are expected to provide assistance and employment resources to workers affected by the closure as the October shutdown date approaches.
