ATLANTA, GA — The Xernona Clayton Statue Project Committee is proud to announce that the City Council of Atlanta, by ordinance, had approved the erection of a statue honoring Xernona Clayton. This statue was crafted by the world-renowned sculptor Ed Dwight of Denver, Colorado. The 8-foot statue was placed in downtown Atlanta at West Peachtree Street and Xernona Clayton Way.

This statue will serve as a special reminder of the invaluable contributions Xernona Clayton has made to the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and the world. The unveiling of her statue was held on Wednesday, March 8 in Xernona Clayton Plaza on International Women’s Day, a global holiday celebrated annually as a focal point in the women’s rights movement.

The statue idea was presented by Rick Baker and Mariela Romero who observed Xernona Clayton’s contributions and pledged to help establish a long-standing work of her community contributions. This statue will be a permanent fixture of Atlanta, GA.

The Xernona Clayton Statue Project Committee is indebted to a major donor who volunteered to contribute the initial expense for the creation of the statue. Additional funds are needed for the statue’s completion and installation. All of the financial contributions for this enduring legacy project will also include maintenance of the statue and park area. You may donate by visiting our Donation webpage.

There is no one more deserving of such an honor than she, Xernona Clayton, an icon, a trailblazer, a leader of the civil rights movement. – Na’eema Rashad, Xernona Clayton Statue Committee Chair

We are inviting you to share in this historic project by becoming a sponsor. Sponsors will receive a special commemorative gift, recognition at the unveiling ceremony, tickets to the unveiling luncheon, and be given credit in all of the printed materials surrounding this magnanimous occasion. You may become a sponsor by visiting our Sponsorship webpage.
