For the second consecutive year, the Tennessee State University Men’s Tennis team has captured the number spot and title as the best HBCU Tennis team in the country. Twenty-six student-athletes from eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) took six singles and four doubles championships during the 23rd annual HBCU National Tennis Championship in the City of South Fulton on Saturday. Nashville, Tenn. (TN Tribune)-Mark Gwyn, the first African American to serve as director for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, died in his home Aug. 22. He was 61. Gwyn served as TBI director for 15 years before retiring in 2018 less than two years into his third term. A native of McMinnville, Tenn., he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in communications, and later enrolled at Tennessee State University, where he earned a master’s degree. Bishop Henry Allen Belin, Jr., a native of Louisiana, was born on September 9, 1927, to Mrs. Beatrice Boney Belin and the Rev. Henry Allen Belin, Sr. Bishop Belin’s father was an active African Methodist (AME) minister in the 8th Episcopal District (Louisiana and Mississippi) for more than 60 years. Bishop Belin received his undergraduate degree from Campbell College in Baker, Louisiana, and a Master of Arts degree from the Lampton School of Religion in Jackson, Mississippi.
