The only way someone with a big idea but minimal resources can out-compete established firms is through government protection of their innovations. Today, we are failing in that responsibility. Our laxity is empowering predators foreign and domestic — endangering not only the next Apple, Microsoft, or Facebook, but our entire economy. For years, the greatest threat to…

By Donald Kirk They’re doing it again. The North Koreans, after respecting China’s request not to test-fire missiles during the Beijing Olympics, are firing away. By now Kim Jong-un has ordered eight test shots this year. The latest, the North has said, was a “reconnaissance satellite” that South Korea’s defense ministry says flew 185 miles before landing off the east coast. That’s hardly a satellite, but perhaps the purpose was to test cameras and other gear before test-firing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting targets in the U.S. The North last test-fired an ICBM in November 2017. Oftentimes, the default reasons that are given for the alarming death rate include limited access to healthcare and socioeconomic barriers. However, according to TOUCH Black Breast Cancer Alliance founder Ricki Fairley, the elephant in the room is limited participation in clinical trials. “A lot of those factors are in play, but when you really look at the science, Black women have never participated…

He was among thousands who’d die in the world-wide epidemic that had already killed former president James K. Polk a month before and would be blamed for the death of Edgar Allan Poe a bit later. Todd’s hasty death-bed will was endorsed by only one witness; Kentucky law required two. Effectively, Robert Smith Todd, one of the richest men…
