Nashville, TN (TN Tribune)– Waste Management has filed for rezoning of 17.25 acres and the fees were waived. It is a downzoning from Industrial Restrictive (IR) to Office Limited (OL), but Office Limited (OL) will allow for a recycling facility as an accessory to a principle use. Therefore if they build an “office” then they can have a recycling facility. It is set before the Metro Planning Commission on January 13, 2022. Make your voices heard. They are not putting offices there as the nearest fire hydrant is 3,000 feet away. The permit can be viewed on the following link http://maps.nashville.gov/MPC/2022Z-003PR-001_Applic.pdf

NEW YORK — Amanda Gorman ended her extraordinary year on a hopeful note. The 23-year-old poet, whose reading of her own “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration made her an international sensation, posted a new work and accompanying video Wednesday on Instagram to mark the end of 2021. “New Day’s Lyric” is a five-stanza, 48-line resolution with themes of struggle and healing known to admirers of “The Hill We Climb” and of her bestselling collection “Call Us What We Carry,” which came out in early December: “What was cursed, we will cure. What was plagued, we will…
By Tom H. Hastings The party favor on the Republican side has been the dog whistle. Lie down with dog whistles and you’ll get up with the fleas of racism and anti-intellectualism. My people came to the US in a wave of late 19th century immigration that was fueled by the trauma of endless wars in Europe, none of which benefitted commoners like my Scottish ancestors, my Swedish ancestors, or my German ancestors. It was a critical race away from the stupidity of wars that sent millions to their deaths and made “infrastructure bills” an ongoing necessity as Europeans industrialized…
By Thomas L. Knapp It’s only early January, and already this 2022 thing is obviously not working out. With the “omicron variant” of COVID-19 upon us, politicians and public health authorities are already off on their next round of COVID-19 Hokey Pokey: You put your school closures in. You pull your mask mandates out. You put your rising case numbers in, and you shake them all about. You do the COVID-19 Hokey Pokey and you order people around. That’s what it’s all about. A successful COVID-19 Hokey Pokey this time around requires ignoring the fact that, even allowing for a…
It’s that time of year again where we begin wrapping up and reflecting on our biggest accomplishments of the year. In those moments of reflection, some of us may tend to find flaws in ourselves and begin to create lofty goals that are difficult to reach in the new year. While the new year is a fresh start full of opportunities, there is often immense pressure to achieve better versions of ourselves. Unfortunately, there is an unspoken rule that resolutions should be all or nothing extremities. Our competitive culture has instilled in us this idea of punishing ourselves if we…
TIME named nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump to the 2021 TIME100, its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, making him the only personal injury trial lawyer to make the list. Crump has established himself as one of the nation’s foremost lawyers and advocates for social and racial justice. In addition to working on some of the most high-profile cases in the U.S., representing the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and Michael Brown, Crump has fought for justice for the residents of Flint, Michigan, who were affected by poisoned…
Henry Aaron made history with one swing of his bat. A year later and on the other side of Georgia, Lee Elder made history with one swing of his driver. They both overcame racist threats to reach milestones that will always be part of sports lore. “Hammerin’ Hank” supplanted Babe Ruth at the top of baseball’s all-time home run list and Elder became the first Black golfer to play in the Masters. Their deaths in 2021 were mourned beyond the sports world and were reminders of the hate, hardships and obstacles they endured with dignity on their way to breaking…
Everyone’s mom – “Mother Doris” – was always guiding and mentoring generations of leaders that wanted to follow in her footsteps where no other African Americans had blazed political trails before. Her sphere of influence opened doors that had never been opened to the Black community in Long Beach. Her son Stephen Topsy said his mom’s legacy was greater in so many ways than the titles she earned at the highest positions of city government. She was a caring and ceaseless giver, always supportive, not only for the immediate family, but for all those who called on her.https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/;ID=168170;size=728×90;setID=329915;type=iframe;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER “She was…
As the calendar turns to a new year and COVID remains as deadly today as the pandemic’s start nearly two years ago, the National Newspaper Publishers Association pauses to remember the icons and others we said farewell to in 2021. From the stunning death of Supremes co-founder and Black Press friend Mary Wilson to the loss of DMX, Colin Powell, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, 2021 featured some of the saddest and most unexpected farewells. “I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supremes,” Berry Gordy, Motown Records’…
