In the US, heart conditions affect nearly 50 percent of African Americans. An even smaller sample of African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans suffer a rare hereditary genetic mutation that causes transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy, or ATTR-CM, which leads to heart failure.
