Last year, 2 million Americans were diagnosed with cancer. Over 600,00 of those people died, costing their loved ones an estimated $150 billion, according to the National Cancer Institute — an amount that is expected to rise as Americans age and “as new, and often more expensive, treatments are adopted.” In the face of that daunting situation, Illumina and its former start-up, Grail, say they can save lives and reduce costs through a vertical re-merger. That move would combine Grail’s leading-edge cancer-detection technology with Illumina’s manufacturing and regulatory capabilities, the two California-based companies say. The proposed re-merger, first unveiled last September,…

A young Spanish diver comes across a spotted wobbegong shark during her extended journey in Australia. The spotted wobbegong shark — more common around Australian waters, as other species live in the Pacific and Indian Oceans — doesn’t look like a typical shark. The creature, with a huge head, looks more like a spotty carpet than a streamlined shark. It’s also wider than it is long. Claudia Argemi Danti visited Australia in March 2020, but the global pandemic halted her plans to return to Spain, and she ended up turning the experience into an ongoing adventure she shares online…
Muryonka the cat still has nine lives: Russian firefighters successfully resuscitated a feline by that name who was saved from a burning building. The rescue mission took place after a blaze was reported in a 16-story residential building in Volgograd, a city in southwest Russia, on July 5. The fire posed a threat for the surrounding area and more that 20 people were evacuated from their homes and several people suffered injuries. Firefighters fought for four hours to contain the blaze. While firefighters rescued a 9-year-old boy on an upper floor, they also found Muryonka, who was unconscious. After the…
Scientists at Jerusalem’s City of David happened upon an unusual finding recently, when they discovered an ancient cache of 29 shark teeth while excavating the basement of a 2,900-year-old home on the site. Strangely enough, the teeth are millions of years older than the house, dating from the dinosaur era. Even stranger, these teeth were not expected to be found near ancient Jerusalem, which is at least 50 miles away from the nearest fossils of the same age. “These fossils are not in their original setting, so they have been moved,” said Thomas Tuetken, the lead researcher from the University…
When bats feel unwell, they maintain social distancing and stay away from their communities — a move that is probably a means of recovery but also of preventing the spread of disease, recent research from Tel Aviv University shows. The study, recently published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Science, monitored two colonies of Egyptian bat fruits, one living in an enclosure and the other in its natural environment. Researchers injected some bats from each group with a bacteria-like protein that stimulated their immune response and caused symptoms such as high fever, fatigue and weight loss, but…
