Widespread looting and chaos are often what we expect in the wake of major disasters. But recent Israeli research has determined that communities impacted by natural disasters actually experience a decrease in crime. The study, conducted by researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, examined data from 10,000 natural disasters of differing scopes that struck the United States from 2004 to 2015, resulting in the deaths of 8,300 people and more than $100 billion in damages. They compared the data between communities that were directly affected with communities that had been spared direct impact. They found that while natural disasters…

Nearly 200 people have been arrested and at least 200 have been injured during weeks-long protests across Spain demanding rapper Pablo Hasel’s release from prison. To date, 189 people have been arrested since protests began on Feb. 16 in hundreds of cities over Hasel’s imprisonment on charges of exalting terrorism and insulting the country’s monarchy on his Twitter feed and in several of his songs. He is serving a nine-month sentence in the contentious free-speech case. “We did not expect so many people to take to the streets and in the way they have,” said Adam Camon, a member of…
An Israeli startup is using electrospinning technology to transform the current wound-healing process. Nanomedic’s Spincare device, which resembles a large staple gun, deploys the electrostatically charged method to charge up a proprietary polymer from a disposable ampule and sprays nanofibers onto wounds as a protective, second skin while they heal. “Wherever the patient is, we can print our electrospun healing fiber matrix directly on the wound. That has a lot of advantages to enhance the healing process,” said Nanomedic CEO Chen Barak, who has a PhD in biomedical engineering. “You apply it once, so there is no dressing change needed.…
When the pandemic sent most everyone home to work in their PJs, many corporate offices became ghost towns and co-working spaces struggled to survive. Now, co-working spaces are reemerging as “flex” workspaces offering the antidote for several COVID-19 ills: working from home fatigue, fluctuating personnel numbers and hesitancy to commit to long-term leases or infrastructure investments. “As companies have been forced to rethink their workplace strategies as a result of the global pandemic, flexibility has become key,” says WeWork Israel General Manager Benjy Singer. “We have seen a significant increase in demand from companies that want flexibility not only in…

Its other plant in Talegaon, a small city in the western state of Maharashtra, is staring at a similar fate after the auto major…

MUMBAI, India — Bollywood is planning to stage a comeback with a slew of big releases over the next few months. This is good news for Hollywood as well, since India is a big market for films made in America. The pandemic-related lockdown and closure of cinemas made 2020 one of the worst years for Bollywood, as the Hindi film industry based out of Mumbai is popularly known. “It made losses of INR 2,000 crore ($284 million),” said trade analyst Komal Nahta. The government had allowed cinemas to reopen on Oct. 1, 2020 — but they could operate at only half…
