The river in the Partido of Junin region in Buenos Aires was severely affected due to droughts that have hit the region since December 2020. Jose Maria Marchetto, the coordinator of the municipal palaeontological Museum Legado del Salado, located in Junin, says that so far 200 fossils have been found in the area. For more than six months, a remarkable group of women’s protection units fought to maintain a Kurdish-majority city in Syria in 2014 during a siege by the Islamic State group. Though the experienced ISIS fighters had advanced weapons, money and resources, it would be the Kurdish units, not the extremist militants, who won the battle for the town of Rojava. In her new book “The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion, Courage, and Justice,” Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, an adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, contends it was the tenacity and ingenuity of the women involved in this…

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have demonstrated in laboratory mice that monoclonal antibodies can be substituted for antibiotics to hinder the growth of tuberculosis germs. It’s estimated that around one-quarter of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis. In Israel, there are about 200 cases a year. Antibiotics are the usual course of treatment, but antibiotic-resistant strains of tuberculosis are now as high as 40 percent in some countries. Monoclonal antibodies — derived from single cells — have been reported as one of the most promising  “cures” for COVID-19. Antibodies from patients who have recovered from a particular illness can…

MUMBAI, India — Bollywood is split over the decision of the Indian government to regulate content on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and others. While some film personalities have claimed that these rules — which also extend to social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter — would interfere with artistic freedom, others believe such control was long due. The Indian government’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Feb. 25 released the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. According to the rules, publishers of online content have to “self-classify the content into five age-based categories.” These…

PUNE, India — India has launched new Information Technology rules that seek to regulate social media platforms, over-the-top (OTT) media platforms, and digital media, tightening control over content and raising fears over breach of user privacy and freedom of expression. Social media sites and messaging apps need to “enable the identification of the first originator of the information,” without going into the contents of the message. While OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hotstar, and digital media have been allowed to self-regulate with a three-tier reparation mechanism, they ultimately defer to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and…
