When Marcus Washington’s football career ended at Mississippi State University in 2009 his new life was just getting started. Washington became a father when he was a college freshman, so he learned how to prioritize things as a young parent/student-athlete. However, he struggled to figure out what to do with his life after football once the NFL didn’t come calling. He eventually figured it out: He is assistant coach at his alma mater, Fort Bend Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas; he founded Motiv8 U, where he works as a student success coach; and he recently released his first…

Did an ancient earthquake described in the Bible some 2,800 years ago reach as far as Jerusalem, the Kingdom of Judah’s capital? An archeological dig says yes. Excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the ruins of an ancient building within the City of David National Park revealed a row of shattered vessels, including bowls, lamps, cooking utensils and storage jars on the earliest floor of the southernmost room. This layer of destruction had no signs of a fire, indicating the collapse of the building’s walls was not a deliberate event. Remains of vessels shattered in an eighth-century B.C.…

Videographer Meyrambek Aralbayuly filmed the rare female red wolf from a drone near the Caspian Sea in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. He posted the footage on his Instagram account on Aug. 6. Under the United States’ Endangered Species Act of 1973, the red wolf is listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The video shows the…

Israel sent a team of 16 firefighters to Greece on Aug. 6 to assist in dealing with severe wildfires plaguing its neighbor across the Mediterranean Sea. The firefighting team was formed following a request from the Greek government for assistance in fighting fires raging on the island of Evia, the Peloponnese peninsula and Fokida in the central region north of Athens. Their task is all the more difficult and dangerous because of Greece’s most intense heat wave in three decades. With temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), one volunteer firefighter died on Aug. 6 and at least…
Several COVID-19 vaccines under development in Israel hold out promise for their ability to protect against variants of the virus that are challenging existing vaccines. Research groups across the world were racing in May 2020 to formulate vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Realizing it was not going to win that race, Israel purchased millions of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines from the United States and led the world in getting eligible citizens vaccinated. Israel was the first country to offer the vaccine to 12 -to 15-year-olds and to offer booster shots to immunocompromised people and those over 60. However, domestic…
Supermarkets sometimes have packers at checkout lines to help bag groceries. Today, markets more urgently need pickers — people who comb the aisles for items ordered online. Every step in the food e-commerce process is complex, from building and managing a user-friendly website that reflects constantly changing prices and inventory, to personalizing special offers, fulfilling orders accurately and restocking shelves. “E-commerce for groceries is very different than for apparel and consumer electronics,” said Orlee Tal, CEO of Israeli retail-tech company Stor.ai. As the company’s name suggests, it uses artificial intelligence (AI) in creating and supporting food retailers’ end-to-end online operations.…

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court on Aug. 7 asked Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to review the ongoing ban on Chinese application TikTok. As per a media report, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah said the telecom authority has failed to justify blocking the video-sharing app. “The TikTok app is a source of income for the underprivileged,” the judgment noted and asked the telecom regulator to submit a report to the court on Aug. 23. The telecom regulator had announced that it blocked Byte Dance’s video-sharing platform in the country due to the “inappropriate content” uploaded on the website. Pakistan had once again…
