Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the world to demand change in the Chinese Communist Party’s behavior. The U.S. can’t stand up to China alone, Pompeo said Thursday, pitching a new alliance of countries. “Maybe it’s time for a new grouping of likeminded nations, a new alliance of democracies,” he said in a speech at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California. Pompeo stopped short of calling for regime change, but said President Xi Jinping, who has been general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party since 2012, is “not destined to tyrannize instead and outside of China forever”…

The first names of Christoffer and Camilla Ellesøe both begin with C, so it’s not surprising that the Danish farming couple would want their children’s names to do the same. What is a bit unusual is the first names they gave to all four of their sons are the makes of tractors that begin with that letter. “Our sons are called Case Christian, Claas Christoff, Cormick Constantin and Clayson Cilas,” Camilla told Zenger News. Camilla is a farmer and Christoffer works as a civil engineer and contractor in Torrild, in east-central Denmark. The tractor-related names came after the couple was…
Judy Shelton, a critic of U.S. Federal Reserve’s expansionist monetary policies and low interest rates, is now one step closer to joining its board of directors. Shelton believes that increasing the supply of money faster than domestic economic growth will lead to inflation and credit bubbles akin to the 2008 financial meltdown while a majority of the Federal Reserve’s current board believes that record-low interest rates pose little risk of overstimulating real estate and other credit-hungry parts of the economy and that inflation remains near historic lows. The U.S. Senate Banking Committee voted along party lines Tuesday to advance the…
A Viking ship that may have been a coffin for a “king” and “queen” more than 1,100 years ago is being uncovered. Excavation of the Gjellestad Viking ship has started almost two years after it was discovered in the Oslofjord region of southeastern Norway, marking the first time in more than 100 years that a complete Viking ship has been excavated in the country. The tomb may contain two burial chambers, hundreds of passages of various kinds and traces of the burial, according to a news release on the project. The trench through the eastern side of the ship during…

No suspects have been identified, the spokesman for the public prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Sebastian Carranza, said during a press conference. Two armed suspects knocked on the front door and Trasante’s wife answered. “The two men pushed her through the long corridor” and called Trasante,…
Scientists have mapped a squid brain for the first time using an MRI in a study that could reveal how these cephalopods are able to camouflage themselves. Research conducted over the last four years to create the first-ever “map” of the squid brain could have far-reaching consequences for technologies ranging from computer vision and soft robotics to disaster relief and “swarm robotics,” he study of how to design groups of robots that operate without centralized control. Dr. Wen-Sung Chung, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland, Australia, and Justin Marshall, a professorial research…
The political fortunes of a top Republican in Ohio came crashing down Tuesday. House Speaker Larry Householder was arrested for his alleged role in a $60 million bribery case. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, urged Householder to resign. “Because of the nature of these charges, it will be impossible for Speaker Householder to effectively lead the Ohio House of Representatives; therefore, I am calling on Speaker Householder to resign immediately,” DeWine said in a statement Tuesday. Householder and four associates were charged with racketeering in what is “likely the largest bribery, money laundering scheme ever perpetrated against the people…
