NASHVILLE, TN — House Minority Leader Karen Camper (D-Memphis) has been re-elected as president of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL Women). The election was held over the weekend at the organization’s annual convention in Chicago. NOBEL Women is a non-profit, non-partisan organization primarily composed of current and former black women legislators as well as many appointed officials. Established in 1985, the organization aims to increase and promote the presence of black women in government, as well as, the public and the private sector and serve as a global voice on issues affecting the lives of all women.
Leader Camper has served in the Tennessee General Assembly for 11 years, representing much of the Whitehaven and Southeast Memphis areas. She was elected Minority Leader last year by the House Democratic Caucus. A veteran of the United States Army, Representative Camper has served as Chair of the Women’s Legislative Caucus, Co-Chair of the Veteran’s Legislative Caucus, Chair of the TN Economic Council on Women and Regional Chair of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. Today, Leader Camper was also honored as a Woman of Excellence by Rainbow PUSH in Chicago (see attached photo), and previously received the prestigious President’s Gavel Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. Camper said, “I am humbled by the trust the members of NOBEL Women have shown in me and will continue to work diligently to advance their causes from the state houses to the boardrooms and beyond.”
