    Dr. Nabaa-McKinney Sworn in as Metro School Board Member for District 4

    NASHVILLE, TN — Dr. Berthena Nabaa-McKinney was sworn in today to serve as the representative for District 4 on

    the Metro Nashville Board of Education. Dr. Nabaa-McKinney, a former teacher with MNPS, was appointed by the Metro Council to serve in this role following the death of Chair Anna Shepherd.

    “Dr. Nabaa-McKinney has a stellar reputation in the community, and we are grateful to have her experience and knowledge of education and MNPS in particular to help lead the district on the Board,” said Dr. Adrienne Battle, director of Metro Nashville Public Schools.

    Nabaa-McKinney is the owner of Nabaa Consulting, LLC, an educational consulting firm specializing in school improvement for Early Learning and K-12 schools. Nabaa-McKinney’s areas of focus include data-driven instruction, social-emotional learning, curriculum and instruction, professional development, accreditation, principal/school leadership, and school/board governing policies and procedures.

    “We are experiencing some of the most challenging times for public education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and the staff and students of Metro Schools during this time,” said Nabaa-McKinney. “Board leadership and oversight is going to be essential to ensuring successful outcomes for all students and families that choose MNPS.”

    Prior to her consultant role, Nabaa-McKinney was the principal at

    Nashville International Academy, and led the school through its restructuring achieving first time accreditation. She also led and served on school and district accreditation teams across the state. During her time at MNPS, Nabaa-McKinney worked at Antioch and Cane Ridge High Schools in various roles, including Chemistry teacher, Science Department Chair, Freshman Academy Lead and ACT Coordinator. She served as a Commissioner on the Metro Action Commission until her recent appointment and currently serves on the Boards of the ACLU-TN, PENCIL, and Muslim American Cultural Center. She is an alumnus of L’ Evate, formerly Leadership Donelson-Hermitage, Class of 2016 and served as a co-chair of their youth leadership program, YELL.

    An election to fulfill the remainder of Chair Shepherd’s term, which expires in 2022, will be held in the general election on November 3, 2020.
