NASHVILLE, TN — The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center celebrated 55 years of providing healthcare to patients through Middle Tennessee on Friday, October 20 at the Geodis Park.

Dr. Matthew Walker Sr. founded the center in 1968 with a special grant of over $1 million from President Richard Nixon. The federally qualified health center in 1970 became the first in the country to be named after a Black American.

The EPIC black and white masquerade gala was attended by over 200 people and featured three live bands, a wide variety of foods and photos from the more than five decades of service to the community.

In addition to the Nashville center, MWCHC has campuses in Clarksville and Smyrna and also has a traveling medical van. The center reaches over 18,000 patients a year and has won numerous awards for the medical care provided to underinsured, uninsured and insured patients.

Descendants and friends of Dr. Matthew Walker Sr. and former CEO Michelle B. Marrs attended the EPIC event. For more information or to make a donation, go to mwchc.org.
