NASHVILLE, TN — On Sunday, June 3, Nashville General Hospital hosted its 12th Annual Dr. Robert E. Hardy Cancer Center Survivorship Celebration. Established in 2008, the Survivorship Celebration is held the first Sunday of every June to honor cancer survivors and their families. The event also provides an opportunity for survivors to share their experiences with others who have walked the same path.

Following a cancer survivor’s impactful testimony at the celebration, the Nashville General Hospital Foundation received an anonymous gift of $50,000 in unrestricted funds.  The anonymous donor was motivated to give after hearing the story of a retired and uninsured gentleman who had been diagnosed with cancer. He often had to make the tough decision to cancel his radiology treatments because he couldn’t afford gas. But despite his challenges, and with the support of the dedicated team at Nashville General Hospital Cancer, he received adequate treatment and is now a cancer survivor.

“This donation is affirmation from the community that Nashville General Hospital is here to stay,” said Vernon Rose, executive director, Nashville General Hospital Foundation. “This hospital serves a vital role in this community and the care of patients rises above all else.”

Nashville General Hospital’s Dr. Robert E. Hardy Cancer Center provides quality care for patients with cancer and hematologic disorders, sickle cell disease, neurologic disorders and renal failure. Patients 18 and older receive treatments including hemotherapy, blood and blood product transfusion, monoclonal antibody treatment, pamidronate infusion, therapeutic phlebotomy, clinic consultation and routine follow-up. The clinic honors its namesake, whose commitment to quality of life for his patients was paramount.
