Josephine Amanda Groves Holloway (1898 to 1988) broke the color barrier for African American girls to become involved in scouting in Tennessee. She began organizing unofficial groups in 1933. They were recognized in 1942 and finally desegregated. The Girl Scouts of the USA named Camp Holloway after her in 1955. Lucie Campbell Williams was an American composer and singer of hymns as well as an educator and advocate or social justice. She was educated in Memphis. When she was 19, she organized a group of Beale Street musicians into the Music Club. She wrote over 100 songs during her lifetime and also introduced renowned singer Marian Anderson to the world. By Sandra Long Weaver Tribune Editorial Director There are just a few days left to see “A Journey of Inspiration,” an exhibit of sculptures by Hattie Marshall-Duncan presented by the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center in Hendersonville. She is the recipient of the 2019 Tennessee Governor’s Folklife Heritage Award.
