Oregon’s U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley and U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) introduced the Abolition Amendment, which would strike the “punishment clause” of the 13th Amendment and abolish forced prison labor. “That amendment is known, when we are in high school, as the amendment that ended slavery in America,” Merkley said during a press conference Monday. ‘The problem with that story is that slavery continued under the (punishment) clause of the 13th Amendment.  Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands announced that it has received a one-year, $125,000 grant from the Legal Services Corporation to assist victims affected by the March 2020 tornadoes in Middle Tennessee.  The LSC Disaster Relief Emergency Grant will provide funding for Legal Aid Society to provide additional direct legal services, educational outreach and free legal clinics to low-income disaster victims in Davidson, Putnam and Wilson counties. The RV that blew up in Nashville on Friday morning was playing a recording that warned it was going to explode, the city’s police chief said.  The recording said “a potential bomb would detonate within 15 minutes,” Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake said during an afternoon news conference.  Officers who had responded to reports of shots fired in the area “decided to evacuate the buildings nearby” and were knocking on doors when the RV exploded, Drake said.  No evidence of a Christmas Day shooting was uncovered before the cops came upon the RV, officials have said.

Metro Social Services opened an extreme cold weather shelter Saturday December 26, 2020.  Metro’s Overflow Shelter will be open at 7pm Saturday at the Nashville Fairgrounds located at 500 Wedgewood Avenue,  Nashville, TN 37203.  People with pets are welcome at the Cold Weather Shelter.  The shelter is in the same complex as the Social Distancing and Isolation shelters at the Fairgrounds but in a separate building. There will be signage for people to go to the correct entrance. NASHVILLE, Tenn. –  The EOC is activated in response to an intentional bombing incident in Downtown Nashville.  Just after 6:30 am on Friday December 25, 2020 an explosion outside of 166 Second Avenue North caused extensive damage.  Representatives from OEM, Nashville Fire Department, Mayor’s Office, Metropolitan Police Department and Federal Agencies will use the EOC to coordinate ongoing response and investigative operations.

Nashville, Tenn. – Less than 24 hours after Dr. Michael Caldwell was asked to resign from his position as the Director of Metro Public Health, a new interim director has been selected.
