Week Six was one of those weeks for Metro schools. The East Nashville Eagles (3-3 overall, 2-1 metro and 2-0 5-3A), opened their beautiful facility but fell to winless Brainerd 20-12. In front of former players and coaches along with their fanbase, the Eagles took the lead on their first play from scrimmage. Junior Jashon Watkins ran a reverse 61 yards for the score. The RePublic Trailblazers were excited about their first ever home football game. The crowd was raucous and the atmosphere was on point. Their opponent on the other hand, the Gordonsville Lions was clicking on all cylinders spoiling Homecoming 37-0. “Our guys fought hard but is wasn’t meant to be,” said Trailblazer head coach Weldon Garlington. “We are young and we grew up some today. The Pearl-Cohn Firebirds (3-1 overall, 0-0 metro and 1-0 District 5-3A) has assumed the top spot in the Wallace Media Group Metro Baker’s Dozen standings after their 49-46 overtime victory over the previously undefeated CPA Lions. After being down at the half 28-17, the Firebirds scored 26 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 43-28 lead going into the fourth. CPA then scored 15 unanswered points to force overtime. This week McGavock High School coach Jay Gore received a surprised message. His Raiders (2-0 overall, 1-0 metro) are the only remaining undefeated team in Metro. Last season the Cane Ridge Ravens and the Stratford Spartans finished the regular season undefeated. Metro Has Tough Opening Week Opening day for High School football has come and gone. Most metro teams struggled. Only five of the 13 teams came away with victories. The Pearl-Cohn Firebirds defeated Republic High School 63-0 to remain at the top this week’s Metro Baker’s Dozen poll. They will have a much stiffer challenge with they travel down West End to take on Montgomery Bell Academy. Lelan Wilhoite had star written all over him since he first touched a football as a child. Now he is officially a “Star” because of his transfer to Class 6A Siegal High School whose nickname is Stars. Former Whites Creek High School star Brian “Penny” Collins has joined the men’s basketball staff at Illinois State University the school announced on Monday. Collins joins former Vanderbilt assistant coach Dan Muller’s staff as an assistant coach. Collins leaves East Tennessee State after two years. As an assistant coach at East Tennessee State during the 2016-17 season, Collins helped the Bucs win the Southern Conference Tournament and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. EAST NASHVILLE — On a hot night in Nashville, the Middle Tennessee Bulldawgs (6-0) stayed red hot, defeating the defending Mid-South Football Alliance champions the Daviess County Spartans (6-1) 51-2 this past Saturday at Stratford High School. After his second straight All Star appearance, he is leading his team in home runs (17) runs batted in (56), hits (103) and walks (44).
