The good news for cryptocurrency is that El Salvador decided to adopt it as legal tender and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision issued a proposal to let banks handle digital assets like Bitcoin. The bad news for corporations? Multiple. When something is legal tender, you must have a way to handle it; the banking proposal shows how unpredictable the values of cryptocurrencies are; a major crypto exchange is getting hit hard by countries refusing to allow it entry, and, as Tesla may well show, when a company holds crypto and the price drops, it can mean a balance sheet…

A low-energy restart and new legal woes have not been enough to dissuade Donald J. Trump from relaunching a program of campaign-style rallies ahead of the 2022 midterms, with the former president pledging Thursday night to forge ahead with events with onetime Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. Trump told the 71-year-old former “O’Reilly Factor” host, who was fired by Fox News after revelations he had paid tens of millions of dollars to settle sexual harassment cases and who now hosts an online streaming show, that he was looking forward to their tour later this year. The pair plan a “History…
Demand for U.S. crude oil and petroleum products remains strong, but markets are keeping a wary eye on tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the OPEC group, analysts told Zenger. The U.S. Energy Information Administration, part of the Energy Department, offers weekly data on commercial storage levels of crude oil and refined petroleum products such as gasoline. Major wide-spread increases are normally indicative of lackluster demand, while the opposite is true for inventory decreases. Reporting a day later because of the long July 4 holiday weekend, the federal energy agency said that total U.S. commercial crude…
A rare 300-year-old sword that belonged to an officer at the Battle of Blenheim, where Winston Churchill’s ancestor the Duke of Marlborough defeated the Bavarians, is now on display in a German castle. The blade, dating back to the beginning of the 1700s and inscribed with the phrase ‘Vivat Maximilian Emanuel’, has recently been added to the Battle of Blenheim collection at Hochstadt Castle in the German state of Bavaria. Experts from the Bavarian Palace Administration believe it belonged to a Bavarian officer, as such expensive engraving was only common on officers’ swords. The inscription honors Maximilian II Emanuel, who…
A young woman is taking legal action against a hospital in Spain after doctors left a piece of gauze inside her neck during an operation, and, thinking her tumor had returned, carried on giving her chemotherapy for two years. “I was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 2019, for which I had surgery and chemotherapy. Then I had radiotherapy in September 2020,” said 22-year-old Adriana Caballero. Lymphatic cancer starts in the immune system’s infection-fighting cells, the lymphocytes, and causes them to mutate and grow out of control. Lymphatic cancer is very treatable, according to Mayo Clinic, but outlooks can vary based…

Despite centuries of attempts to enable humans to fly without external assistance, we remain unable to propel our bodies into the air. Turns out, it’s not just because we don’t have wings. A recent study published in Science Advances explains that specific molecular characteristics distinguish birds from other creatures, and these differences allow birds to flap their wings and fly. Previous studies proved that the ability of mammals and reptiles to walk is embedded within their spinal cords. This new study by professors Avihu Klar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Claudio Mello from Oregon Health and Science University…
Talk about burning rubber (and more): A luxury McLaren supercar was reduced to a pile of ashes on an Italian mountain road. The McLaren sports car caught fire on the Pordoi Pass in the Italian Dolomites. The video was posted on the Instagram page of the Pordoi Hotel, near where the July 4 incident took place. “They were a group of Finns,” a hotel worker who saw the conflagration said. “There must have been 10 people with five beautiful cars.” The driver of the McLaren, a car estimated to sell for about $200,000, had just been driven through the Pordoi…
